19-Year-Old Drowns At Monroe County Quarry

MONROE TWP. (WWJ) - State police say a 19-year old man has drowned in a Monroe County lake that was once the site of a rock quarry.

Three people were swimming in "Lake Monroe" around 6:15 p.m. Thursday when one of them disappeared under the water and never resurfaced.

Divers quickly responded to the scene, at the corner of Dunbar Road and South Dixie Highway near LaPlaisance Road, and recovered the man's body a few hours later.

The man has not yet been identified, but reports indicate he might have been from out-of-town.

The lake, a former quarry, is now private with warning signs to swim at your own risk. The quarry was actively mined for more than 80 years, but closed production in 1993. After that, the space filled with water.

The death remains under investigation.
