18-Year-Old Man Killed In Head-On Crash Near Selfridge

HARRISON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) - An 18-year-old Chesterfield Township man is dead and another person is hospitalized after a crash near Selfridge Air National Guard Base early Monday morning.

The Macomb County Sheriff's Office says it happened shortly before 3 a.m. as the young man in a BMW, traveling eastbound on North River Road, tried to pass a Saab that was also travelling eastbound.

When the driver crossed the center line of North River he slammed head-on into a westbound Chevy Malibu, according to investigators. The driver of the BMW was killed on impact. The driver of the Malibu, a 19-year old New Baltimore resident, was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The Saab was damaged in the crash, but the driver — a 19-year-old from Harrison Township resident — wasn't hurt, according to the sheriff's office.

A portion of North River Road was shut down for an ongoing investigation. No names have been released.

Sheriff's officials say it's not known at this time if alcohol was a factor.
