18 Mile Road Closed Due To Industrial Fire

STERLING HEIGHTS (WWJ) - Authorities have shut down a portion of a popular Macomb County road due to an industrial  fire.

The fire broke out around 3 a.m. Tuesday at Industrial Metal Coating Co. on 18 Mile Road, just east of Mound Road in Sterling Heights.

Fire Chief Chris Martin said the blaze apparently started as a pallet fire behind the business.

"The fire was so intense that it burned its way into the building," Martin told WWJ's Mike Campbell. "None of the metal finishings were burning, it was mostly wood and plastic. We've got the fire under control, we've just got a lot of mop up to do."

It doesn't appear anyone was inside the building when the fire spread.

"Nobody's hurt," Martin said. "We do have some wires down, there was a lot of smoke for a while but it's not a HAZMAT situation. Everybody's safe, we're just trying to rotate the crews with other cities right now because they've been working for a couple hours."

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Eighteen Mile Road between Mound and Van Dyke Avenue will remain closed as firefighters continue working the scene.
