16-Year-Old Killed In Drive-By Shooting On Detroit's East Side

DETROIT (WWJ) - Police are investigating after a 16-year-old boy was gunned down on Detroit's east side overnight.

The shooting happened just before 3 a.m. Friday on Roxbury Street, in a neighborhood near I-94 and Cadieux Road.

Rhonda Martin said her son Terell Martin-Coleman was outside of their home with his two brothers, ages 24 and 14, when someone drove by and opened fire, striking the teen. His older brother rushed him to a nearby hospital, but Martin-Coleman later died from his injuries.

"I don't know, it just happened so suddenly, like, I don't know what to say," a distraught Martin told WWJ's Charlie Langton. "Now I've got to try to find how to bury him and everything. I don't have the money for that. It's just too much on me."

Police have canvassed the neighborhood but so far, no one is claiming to have seen or heard anything. Investigators on the scene also haven't found any shell casings.

Bishop Willie Martin, the teen's uncle, was among relatives gathered at the family's home. He said the violence in the city is senseless.

"He came outside and there was a drive-by and it took his life," Martin told WWJ's Charlie Langton. "And it's kind of sad because you can't even sit on your porch now-a-days."

Maria Star, Martin-Coleman's godmother, said she's still trying to wrap her head around what happened.

"I got a phone call, and I live all the way out at 15 Mile in Clinton Township, and it just messed me up to know that I've got to come see my godson, go to the hospital and see him laying like that. You know what I'm saying? Because I just was talking to him on the phone not too long ago," she said.

No arrests have been made. Police are looking for two suspects, described only as males, driving a black sedan.

An investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information is urged to contact police at 313-596-1616 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK-UP.
