15-Year-Old Boy Drowns In Unguarded Park Lake

NORTH STAR TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Authorities in central Michigan say a 15-year-old boy drowned while swimming in an unsupervised lake at a park in Gratiot County.

County parks Director Pete Little says there are no lifeguards on duty and signs say people swim at their own risk.

The sheriff's department says it got a call Sunday evening saying that a teen was missing in the lake at Reed Park. It's in North Star Township, about 35 miles north of Lansing.

The Saginaw News says that Shawn Schultz of Bannister was swimming with friends when he began to struggle.

Authorities say a 15-year-old friend tried to help the teen but was unable to rescue him.

The sheriff's department says it found Shawn's body about 11:30 a.m. Monday in about 12 feet of water.
