10-Year-Old Boy Drowns While Swimming At Michigan State Park

FRENCHTOWN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) — A 10-year-old southeastern Michigan boy has drowned while swimming in Lake Erie.

Monroe County Sheriff Dale Malone says someone called 911 Friday afternoon and reported seeing the boy struggling in the water at Sterling State Park in Frenchtown Township, southwest of Detroit.

The caller said the boy was being swept from shore and had gone beneath the water.

A dive team found him in about 4 feet of water, 25 yards from shore. He was pronounced dead at an area hospital.

Authorities say the boy is from Wayne, west of Detroit. His name was not released Friday.
