Man Killed When SUV Crashes Head-On Into Semi On Opdyke Rd.

AUBURN HILLS (WWJ) - A Pontiac man is dead after his SUV crashed head-on into a gavel hauler in Oakland County.

Police said it happened on Opdyke Rd.,between South Blvd. and Auburn Rd. in Auburn Hills, at around 11 a.m. on Thursday.

Auburn Hills Police Lt. Jill McDonnell confirmed the one fatality, adding that it was fortunate that no one else was hurt.

"A vehicle, a maroon SUV, was traveling southbound on Opdyke Road when witnesses reported it drifted over across all the lanes and hit a semi gravel hauling truck head-on, and the propelled into a blue vehicle," she told WWJ's Sandra McNeill.

Firefighters had to pry open the SUV with Jaws of Life to get the driver out. He was pronounced dead at the scene. It's unclear at this time if it was a medical emergency or something else that caused him to drift into oncoming traffic. His name and age were not immediately released.

McDonnell said the gravel hauler jackknifed, but the truck driver escaped uninjured.

Opdyke Rd. was closed shut down for hours for an accident investigation, but all but one lane has since reopened to traffic.
