1 Person Dead After Boat Capsizes On Anchor Bay

HARRISON TOWNSHIP (WWJ) -  Officials are confirming they have found the body of a boater missing since a boat capsized Wednesday evening.

The United States Coast Guard assisted in the search for a missing man after a boat carrying two men capsized on Anchor Bay in Harrison Township.

Macomb County Sheriff's Lieutenant John Michalke says a 16-foot aluminum boat carrying the two tipped over in Anchor Bay around 7:45 p.m. Neither of the men, described as roommates, were wearing life vests.

One man was rescued and is hospitalized with hypothermia, said Michalke. The other man's body was located around 11:30 p.m. by an underwater search robot.

Battalion Chief Andy Hood says a bystander rescued the 39-year-old man. "He was taken to the hospital with severe hypothermia," said Hood. "The water temperature is about 40 degrees and he was brought in - in critical condition and he's currently in their ICU - he's not able to communicate right now.

"My guess is this time of year - people are starting to get out to try some fishing, but I'd recommend anyone on the water, especially with water temperatures being this cold -- be wearing a life jacket. Neither of these victims were wearing a life jacket."

The Macomb County Sheriff's Department Marine Division and the U.S. Coast Guard were involved in search efforts.
