Young Moose Euthanized After Getting Stuck In Cliff Ledge

GUNNISON, Colo. (CBS4) - A young bull moose had to be euthanized Tuesday night after it was unable to climb out of a ledge in a cliffside near Gunnison.

The moose had been up in the draw since Friday, Nov. 20. Wildlife officers had attempted to lure him out, without success.

He was visible to drivers traveling westbound on Highway 135 into Gunnison, some of whom stopped to take pictures. The moose had an unusual antler formation, similar to an elk's.

Colorado Parks and Wildlife officers said it was a tough call, but there was no safe way to recover the animal. They were able to get a closer look Wednesday, particularly at an injury, and determined the moose's hind leg was infected.

The head of the moose is now being analyzed for disease.
