Wounded Colorado Trooper In Good Spirits, Talking

DOTSERO, Colo. (AP) - The Colorado State Patrol says a trooper wounded by a man along Interstate 70 is awake, in good spirits and communicating with officials.

Thirty-one-year-old Trooper Eugene Hofacker remains in the hospital in Glenwood Springs, where he will undergo additional surgery on Friday.

Hofacker and another trooper were driving together to a training session when they stopped to help a driver stopped in Glenwood Canyon Thursday morning. The driver fired at Hofacker but the other trooper was able to fire back and kill the suspect.

Colorado State Patrol Chief Scott Hernandez says other troopers traveling to the conference were nearby and able to administer first aid quickly.

Garfield County Sheriff Lou Vallario says the suspect has an extensive history of violent crime and served time in prison.
