Work On New Bridge Starts On U.S. 34 Near Greeley
GREELEY, Colo. (AP) — Construction is starting on a permanent road and bridge along a stretch of U.S. 34 east of Greeley washed out by last year's flooding.
The $22 million project is needed because the floods changed the course of the South Platte River. A temporary two-lane road was built around the side of the flooded portion of the old road, called the "big hole" by locals.
A new four-lane road along with the bridge will now be built over the river that should be able to withstand future storms.
Gov. John Hickenlooper and other elected officials plan to attend a groundbreaking event on Friday.
