Wildfires Break Out In Fort Collins

FORT COLLINS, Colo. (CBS4) - Authorities in Fort Collins are working to determine what caused two different small wildfires to ignite on Monday.

Both fires were located in southern Fort Collins.

One was located south of East Harmony Road, and police had to close off some roads in the area as they battled that fire.

As of 7:30 p.m. the fire wasn't completely under control. Smoke could be seen from several miles away.

It started close to the road and moved south, burning several hundred yards.

Hot temperatures and dry conditions helped fuel the fires.

"We have dry vegetation, dry grasses throughout the summer and there's always that potential for fires," said Poudre Fire Authority spokeswoman Madeline Noblett. "So it's a busy weekend and we just ask people to be safe while they're having fun."

The other fire burned about 2 acres of grass near the Cathy Fromme Prairie Natural Area and the Fossil Creek Trail. That fire started about 5:30 p.m. Monday.

The fire spread about two acres before crews were able to put it out.
