7 acre wildfire sends up smoke in Colorado foothills in an area where there's already a burn scar

A small wildfire in Heil Valley Ranch put up smoke in northern Boulder County late Wednesday afternoon. The open space area in the Colorado foothills south of Lyons and west of Longmont is popular for hikers and mountain bikers.

The fire grew slowly and was measured at 7 acres, according to the Boulder County Sheriff's Office.

Fire crews responded quickly to the fire, which is located in an area where there is already a burn scar from a previous wildfire. That means Wednesday's fire doesn't have much fuel to grow.

No structures were threatened by the fire and there were no evacuations, however visitors to the park were asked to leave and no new visitors were allowed due to the firefight.

A helicopter did water drops on the fire before it got dark.

Anyone who sees smoke coming from the area should be aware that there's no need to call 911.
