Interstate 70 Reopens After 'Multiple Fires' Ignite Near Avon

AVON, Colo. (CBS4)- One westbound lane of Interstate 70 reopened after all lanes were closed at Avon on Monday afternoon due to wildfire activity. The closure was announced by the Colorado Department of Transportation.

The closure was at exit 167 for Avon. There were significant delays in the area due to the previous closure.

Eagle River Fire Protection District says firefighters actually responded to a report of a multiple fires burning along the interstate. They found more than a dozen small grass fires between Avon and Edwards.

They were all extinguished.

Some of the fires were right below the Singletree subdivision, but no structures were damaged.

Firefighters ask homeowners, especially those in mountain communities, to take every precaution to protect your property and family.

It's not clear how big the fires were or how they started.
