Werthmann: 'Today I Focused On Strength And Endurance'

By Kelly Werthmann

Today I woke up before the sun.

You'd think that would be easy for a weekend morning anchor who wakes up at 3:30 a.m. to be to work by 5 a.m., but it's not. It's especially difficult to not want to hit snooze 10 times let alone get up and run at that ungodly hour. Moments like this are when I miss my old evening schedule – wake up at 8 a.m., get out for a run around 8:30 a.m., back home by 10 a.m., then prepare for the work day ahead. Finding a new workout routine has been one of the more difficult challenges to my schedule change, but today I took on that challenge and got moving super early.

Today I focused on strength and endurance by going to Orange Theory Fitness for an hour of kick-butt training. I don't think I've ever sweat so much in my life! It took a while to get going – my eyelids were so heavy at times I thought I was going to fall asleep while on the treadmill! Once I found my rhythm, it was go time. From "all out" springs on the treadmill to several rounds of squats and ab routines in the weight room, plus a few thousand meters on the row machine, I am feeling the burn (in the non-political way, of course). OTF coaches suggest getting anywhere from 12 to 25 minutes in the "orange zone," so I didn't quite meet the mark, but I did clock a couple miles in my run which is definitely better than nothing.

Since I finished my sweat-tastic workout before rush hour, I took time to do a cool-down jog at a park nearby. Right now I'm hoping to clock 6-10 miles per week, so the light jog got me to three miles on the day. Three more than a I got all of last week… :/

Before hitting the showers, I took a minute to reflect on my early, early morning workout. Yes, I could've pushed harder. Yes, I could've ran farther. No, I will not give up. Despite the comfort of my bed (or even my new lounge chairs in my backyard – see my shameless selfie), the temptation to press snooze or the "I'll do it tomorrow" excuse, I love how I feel after my power hour and light jog. It totally beats sleeping in! Okay, that may be a stretch… Needless to say, I am anxious to run again tomorrow and perhaps the day after that.
