Wellington Webb, Former Denver Mayor, Honored With Statue

DENVER (CBS4) - Former Denver Mayor Wellington Webb was honored on Wednesday for his leadership and hard work as the first Black mayor of the Mile High City. He was honored with a statue that's located in the building that's named after him -- the Wellington E. Webb Municipal Building.

At the unveiling ceremony, Gov. Jared Polis was among the speakers who praised Webb for his vision which inspired growth as well as for the positive impact Webb had on Denver. Webb also took a turn at the microphone.

"This for me is about giving a lot of thank yous after many of you out there... I want to thank those people that were in District 8 that had faith in me and to support me three times," Webb said.

The statue is titled "The Walk of Mayor Wellington Webb," which refers to the tennis shoes he wore during his mayoral campaign in 1991 in which he walked all over the city and met with everyday citizens. It was created by renowned African American sculptor Ed Dwight.
