Weld County Sees First Human Case Of West Nile Virus
WELD COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - The Weld County Department of Public Health and Environment confirmed Thursday the first reported human case of West Nile Virus for 2016.
"Most people infected with West Nile virus will not show any symptoms," said Mark Wallace, MD MPH, Executive Director for the Health Department. He says typically, those who have the virus will recover on their own, though fatigue and weakness can last weeks or months.
A second case is under investigation in the Johnstown area. Last year, there were 10 confirmed human cases of West Nile in Weld County.
County health officials recommend the four D's to prevent mosquito bites and to reduce breeding areas:
- DRAIN standing water around your house weekly. Remember to drain water from tires, cans, flowerpots, clogged rain gutters, rain barrels, toys and puddles.
- DUSK and DAWN are when mosquitoes are most active. Limit outdoor activities and take precautions to prevent mosquito bites during these times.
- DEET is an effective ingredient to look for in insect repellents. Always follow label instructions carefully.
- DRESS in long sleeves and pants in areas where mosquitoes are active.
