Warning System Malfunction Gives 4 A.M. Wake Up Call

LONGMONT, Colo. (CBS4)- The outdoor emergency warning systems in Longmont malfunctioned early Thursday morning.

The warning system set off a tone about 4 a.m. Thursday that is not normal for the system. The ton continued for about one hour.

Longmont city officials said the system is designed to be shut off remotely but that didn't happen. Instead crews with Longmont Power and Communications, along with public safety crews, had to manually shut off the system at all 17 posts around the city.

What caused the system to malfunction is unknown. The system has been shut down until further notice.

The City of Longmont issued an apology for the inconvenience and lost sleep for the equipment failure.
