Vigil Honors Victim In Lodo Shooting, Office Community

DENVER (CBS4)- A vigil will begin on Thursday evening to honor the victim who was shot and killed by her soon-to-be ex-husband.

Cara Russell was shot several times Tuesday afternoon in The Alliance Center at 1536 Wynkoop where she worked as the executive director of the Colorado Recycling Association.

The gunman, her estranged husband Mickey Russell, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound before police arrived.

The shooting has been difficult for those who worked in Russell's office and those who worked in the building. Before Mickey shot his wife, there was a short chase before he caught up with her.

That caused some trauma to those who witnessed the domestic disturbance that turned deadly. The Alliance Center reopened on Thursday after it remained closed on Wednesday.

The incident prompted a massive response from police in Denver who shut down several city blocks and put officers with rifles on the roofs of nearby buildings.

Many of those who worked inside were alerted to gunshots and ran from the building, unaware if it was an active shooter situation.

"I think the mood there is pretty solemn at this point. They're not afraid. They're not going to be somehow affected by this other than feeling just the fact that the incident happened. They know it's not a random act. They know that these things happen around the world every day, but it happened tot hem and it happened with them and that's a big piece of what we're talking about tonight," said Andy Boian, CEO of Dovetail Solutions.
