Family Wants Justice After Westminster Shooting

WESTMINSTER, Colo. (CBS4) - The mother of a 24-year-old man who was shot and killed by a security guard at his Westminster apartment complex says she knows her son may have been in the wrong but she thinks the end result wasn't justified.

Before the shooting on Aug. 2, David Ludewig was drinking and celebrating news that his wife was pregnant with their first child.

"He was super excited, he wanted it to be a girl," Laurie Ludewig told CBS4.

The guard confronted him for allegedly urinating on a trash bin outside his apartment in the Sunset Ridge apartments at 8300 North Sheridan Boulevard at approximately 1:30 a.m..

Ludewig allegedly pointed a pellet gun that looked like a real gun at the guard before he was shot and killed in what police said may have been a case of self defense.

Laurie Ludewig was joined by other family members and friends of David's on Wednesday evening who are hoping to spread awareness about the case. She said they hope justice will be served in the case.

"David was a good man, he was a good kid and for him to lose his life over such a thing is just horrible," said Laurie Ludewig during the protest in which everyone waved signs at drivers passing by. Some honked in solidarity.

One sign said "A trigger happy guard is not a security guard."

"If only the security guard would have followed protocol and called the cops if it was getting so out of hand," she said.

There have been no charges in the case so far. The case is in the hands of the district attorney.

Police said the guard, whose name hasn't been released, works for Pentagon Protective Service and is licensed to carry a gun in the city.
