Trial Wrapping Up For Man Accused In Wild Crime Spree
CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (CBS4) – A jury is deliberating the fate of a man accused of trying to kill police officers during a wild crime spree last February.
Many of the victims and law enforcement officers involved in the incident were present in court on Tuesday.
A pursuit started just after midnight on February 23 at a Taco Bell off Plum Creek and Perry Street in Castle Rock. Police tried to contact Clifford Galley, 24, a wanted fugitive in a stolen vehicle with two other people.
"The suspects started firing at the officers and attempted to ram one of the officers," Lt. Doreen Jokerst with Parker police said in February.
The suspects sped out of the Taco Bell drive-through headed towards Parker.
"Shots were fired at that time. The suspects continued northbound to the intersection of Clark Farms where they dumped the vehicle and fled on foot," Jokerst said.
In the early morning hours police from eight different jurisdictions surrounded the neighborhood. Police took Gwen Devilbiss, 19, into custody and then Galley and David Vasquez, 25, were arrested nearby.
Officers hurt during the pursuit suffered only minor injuries.
While Galley was in custody, he was named as one of the suspects the "Operation Tattletale" takedown. The roundup involved a methamphetamine and cocaine ring that police say burglarized homes, stole cars and traded the cars for drugs.
The prosecution told the jury on Tuesday Galley would have done anything to get away from police, including being indifferent to human life.
