'Trashy' Octopus Takes Up Residence At Union Station
DENVER (CBS4)- The old saying is true at the Denver Zoo-- one man's trash is another man's treasure. Now an octopus from a special exhibit at the zoo is on display at Union Station.
The 850-pound sculpture named "Octavia" is made entirely from trash. It was hauled in and placed at the downtown landmark on Friday.
The piece is part of "Washed Ashore, Art to Save the Sea." The traveling exhibit continues through Jan. 17, 2017.
The exhibit will feature 15 giant sculptures of sea life made almost entirely from trash collected from beaches.
It was developed by the nonprofit group The Washed Ashore Project to create awareness about marine debris and plastic pollution through art.
"Although these are beautiful we hope they're a little bit horrifying because this is all garbage off the beaches, every piece of plastic we used was once purchased by someone and then ended up in the ocean where it is not supposed to be," said Executive Director and Artist Angela Haseltine Pozzi.
