Train Hauling Fracking Sand Derails In Northern Colorado
TIMNATH, Colo. (AP) — Firefighters say nine train cars that derailed near an elementary school in northern Colorado were carrying sand used in fracking but no hazardous materials.
The Great Western cars, part of a 100-car train, came off the tracks and tipped Sunday morning in Timnath, east of Fort Collins. No one was hurt.
Poudre Fire Authority spokeswoman Madeline Noblett says it was lucky none of the surrounding homes was damaged.
The Coloradoan reports that trains that carry crude often move through the area and it took some time before authorities to confirm that they were no materials that posed a chemical or explosive threat.
