Redstone Castle Sold For $2.2 Million, Tours To Expand

GLENWOOD SPRINGS, Colo. (AP) - New owners of a $2.2 million historic castle plan to rent rooms and expand tours for the public.

The Redstone Castle's sale to Hotel Denver owners Steve and April Carver closed in early November after the couple topped bids from two competitors in an October auction, reported the Post Independent.

"We like the authenticity of the older properties, and we want to see it vibrant again," April Carver said.

John D. Rockefeller, J. Pierpont Morgan and Teddy Roosevelt have all stayed at the 23,000-square-foot residence built in 1899 for mining magnate John C. Osgood.

"It is because of the stewardship of past owners that so many original items remain, and have been well cared for," Steve Carver said. "We plan to continue to care for the property in that tradition."

The Carvers say they plan to fold the mansion into their hotel operation to the north in Glenwood Springs.

"The hotel was our first once-in-a-lifetime opportunity," Steve Carver told the Post Independent. "This is our second."

They also want to open up the carriage house, stables, servant areas, and other parts of the castle and grounds that people could not explore previously.

"Think Downton Abbey," April Carver said. "We think people would like to see how the complex and often difficult support services of the castle functioned."

Parts of the 150-acre property are under a historic conservation easement put in place in 2005 when the Internal Revenue Service was the owner.

"We know we wanted to find a sustainable economic use that's compatible with the easement," she said. "We have a lot of experience with lodging, so we'll probably do something in that vein."

The first rooms for rent since 2002 could be available by next summer.
