Tornadoes Hit Berthoud, Simla, Homes Damaged

BERTHOUD, Colo. (CBS4)- A tornado struck the Front Range town of Berthoud on Thursday evening, damaging several homes in the area. Another tornado struck the eastern plains town of Simla, also causing damage.

The tornado struck after 6:30 p.m. Thursday near the small town located about 40 miles north of Denver, west of Interstate 25 in Larimer County. There are confirmed reports of damage to at least three homes in that area and even more in northern Boulder County.

There were no reports of injuries.

The City of Longmont tweeted out that everyone should take cover.

It is unclear whether anyone was injured.

There was a tornado warning in that area at the time the tornado struck.

At 7:05 p.m. a confirmed tornado was spotted five miles northeast of Lyons moving west.

The Boulder County Sheriff's Office responded to a weather emergency in northern Boulder County and southern Larimer County. Everyone is asked to stay out of the area until the storm passes and the damage is assessed. The sheriff's office said more than two dozen residences have been damaged.

They did not indicate whether the damage was from flooding or the tornado.

The Red Cross set up a shelter and evacuation center at Berthoud Community Center located at 248 Welch Ave in Berthoud. Red Cross volunteers are in the area helping assess damages and determine how to help in the aftermath of the storms.

Rain and hail continued into Thursday night and as the heavy rain came down, concerns over flooding persisted in several areas across Colorado.

Highway 287 was closed at the north end of Longmont from Highway 66 to the north County Line. Other road closures on Thursday night included 95th Street from Hwy. 66 to the north County Line, 83rd Street from Yellowstone to the County Line, and 75th Street north of Hwy. 66.

A tornado touched down in Simla about 5:15 p.m. There are reports of five homes damaged in that area.
