Toddler Remains In Critical Condition After Being Shot By 5-Year-Old

PUEBLO, Colo. (CBS4) – A 3-year-old girl remains in the hospital after being shot by a 5-year-old in Pueblo Monday morning.

Witnesses say the two are cousins but police have not confirmed their relationship.

According to police, it was another 9-year-old child who was able to get the gun from inside the home on Colfax Avenue.

The child was shot a single time, and the bullet entered and exited without breaking any bones.

The children said they learned how to operate a gun from video games.

The victim was flown to a hospital in Colorado Springs for treatment. She's listed in critical but stable condition.

The girl's name has not been released. The child who shot her won't be charged because of the age.

The mother of the victim and her boyfriend, identified as Adrian Chavez, 22, were at the home at the time of the shooting. Chavez, who had warrant for failure to appear, fled the scene but was later arrested Monday afternoon. He will be charged with child abuse resulting in serious bodily injury since he allegedly left the gun unattended.
