Thornton Police: 'DUI Driver' Going Wrong Way Crashed Into 2 Patrol Cars

THORNTON, Colo. (CBS4) -- Police say a drunk driver went the wrong way on Thornton Parkway and crashed into two police cars Thursday night. The crash happened right outside of Thornton City Hall and Thornton Police Headquarters.

Police said the Chevy Tahoe was traveling westbound in the eastbound lanes and hit two Thornton police cars that were turning eastbound from Civic Center Drive. The officers have minor injuries from the crash.

"DUI driver transported to local hospital unknown injuries," Thornton police tweeted.

The driver, later identified as Alejandro Yanez Aguirre, 48, was evaluated and treated for injuries before being released into police custody. He faces charges of DUI, reckless driving, possession of a weapon while intoxicated, and failure to provide proof of insurance. Police said Aguirre had a handgun on him at the time.
