Theft At Liquor Store Turns Dangerous For A Witness

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - Police in Jefferson County are searching for a group of thieves who hit a liquor store and then opened fire on a witness.

The crime happened just before noon at the Woodmar Plaza near the intersection of Peakview Drive and Wadsworth Boulevard.

Three men and one woman stole alcohol and after the robbery they shot at a witness.

"Somebody outside the store at the time saw them go in, they looked suspicious, he became concerned and tried to get a vehicle and suspect description and they opened fire on him," Jefferson County Sheriff's spokeswoman Jenny Fulton said.

The thieves got away in a blue Nissan Altima.

The witness who was shot at spoke to CBS4 off camera. He is a former state trooper, and says one of the bullets barely barely missed him and wound up striking his car.

The incident happened near a day care center, and Nate Rowe said he came to pick up his children as soon as he heard about the shooting.

"After I realized that her teacher told me that they were in the playground when they heard the shots, then it kind of got a little more real for me," he said. "Unfortunately we live with this every day."

Authorities told CBS4 later in the day that they were following leads in their investigation but that no arrests have been made so far.
