The United States of Emoji: Popular Icons By State

DENVER (CBS4) - Emojis are taking over our texts and replacing our words according to a new report by SwiftKey.

Nearly 74% of Americans say they use an emoji every single day, with happy faces, sad faces and hearts the most popular overall.

The study also broke down popular emoji by state, pointing out the icons used most in each.

Some are obvious: Hawaii is the top user of the surfing emoji, the wave emoji, the pineapple emoji, and the volcano emoji.

Others not so much: Rhode Island uses the fire emoji, the high-heeled shoe emoji, and the bomb emoji more than any other state.

Particularly popular in Colorado are a snow-capped mountain, an open book, and a little mouse. They're used more here than in any other state.

Colorado also uses the snowboarder emoji, sunflower emoji, and guitar emoji more than the average.
