Lawmakers Approve Texting & Driving Penalty Increase

DENVER (CBS4) – Colorado lawmakers have approved a bill that would raise the penalties for texting and driving.
Currently, the fine for texting and driving is $50 with one point on an offender's license. SB17-027 raises the fine to $300 with four points on a license for a the first offence.

The bill was inspired by a case in Colorado last year where a drunk driver was texting while behind the wheel, struck a couple on their motorcycle and killed them.
The bill now heads to Gov. John Hickenlooper's desk.
