Terry Maketa, Embattled El Paso Sheriff, Leaves Office
EL PASO COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4) - Terry Maketa, the controversial El Paso County sheriff, stepped down two weeks before the end of his third term.
In 2014, Maketa was accused of having affairs with three female subordinates, creating a hostile work environment and abusing power. In a report released in October, an independent investigator also concluded that Maketa endorsed a candidate in exchange for personal favors. Investigations into the accusations are ongoing.
A group led an unsuccessful recall effort in 2014 to remove him from office.
Maketa, who announced his retirement on Dec. 19, spent 27 years with the sheriff's department.
The new sheriff, Bill Elder, was sworn into office Wednesday.
