Teen Killed After Fall At Colorado National Monument
FRUITA, Colo. (CBS4) - Search and rescue teams recovered the body of a 16-year-old boy from Grand Junction who fell to his death while hiking with his cousin at the Colorado National Monument.
The incident happened on Independence Overlook just before 5 p.m. on Tuesday.
Authorities say the boy, identified as Marcos Alejandro Camacho Guillen, went past the guard rail at a viewing area and slipped as he was looking over the edge of the cliff.
According to the Denver Post, Monument superintendent Lisa Eckert said strong wind gusts were reported in the area during the time of the child's 100-foot fall.
Rescuers say the boy was in and out of consciousness when they got to him but he died before they could get him to the hospital.
The coroner on Wednesday ruled Guillen's death an accident.
