Teen Hunter Safe After Spending Night Lost In Forest

PUEBLO, Colo. (CBS4) - A father is relieved after his 13-year-old son got lost in the forest for more than a day in Custer County west of Pueblo.

Clayton Jones, 13, got separated from his father and grandfather while on a family hunting trip. He apparently got lost Saturday morning after taking a wrong turn. More than 12 hours later, with still no sign of another person, he had to seek shelter.

"A bit freaked out, it was a little scary," Clayton Jones said. "Just wanted to get home."

The boy built a fire and slept on the deck of a cabin that he found. The next morning he eventually found a road and ran into friends who were searching for him.

Clayton's father, Barry Jones, was overcome with joy.

"I cried for probably 10 minutes, I couldn't even talk," Barry Jones said. "To have a kid missing for that long of a time and not knowing if he's okay or not … that's the hardest thing I've ever been through in my life."

The family says they are continuing their hunting trip this week.
