Teen Charged In Fatal Westminster Shooting Gets 5 Years

BRIGHTON, Colo. (AP) - A teenager who was charged in a fatal shooting at a Westminster park has been sentenced to five years in the state's youth offender system.

The Adams County District Attorney's Office says 17-year-old Israel Maestas was sentenced Wednesday for the Dec. 5 shooting that killed 21-year-old Hector Castillo and wounded 25-year-old Aaron Castillo. The victims, who are not related, were shot in the back.

Police say the shooting happened after a fight involving several people at England Park. Maestas, who was charged as an adult, told police he fired his gun after a confrontation during which he was punched in the face and fell to the ground.

He was convicted in September of several charges, including felony reckless manslaughter.
