Neighbors who saw the arrest described several Commerce City police officers with guns drawn, with some standing behind a large protective body shield. Police said at one point a veteran sergeant in pursuit of a suspect believed that his life might have been in jeopardy, so he fired his weapon.

"It's my understanding that the individual may have reached into his waistband, either for a weapon, or he reached into his waistband acting like he had one," Detective Mike Saunders said. "The officer felt threatened at that time and fired one round."

Nobody was hit in the shooting.

The suspects were taken into custody. Their names haven't been released as investigators work to verify their identities.
