Suspect Officially Charged In Loveland Police Officer Shooting
LOVELAND, Colo. (CBS4)- The man accused of shooting a police officer in Loveland has been officially charged.
Cody Powell has been charged with attempted murder and assault in the shooting of Loveland Police Officer Garret Osilka.
Osilka was wounded by a shotgun blast during a routine traffic stop on March 2 and an intensive search began after the suspects drove off. He survived because his bullet-proof vest took most of the damage.
After turning himself in two days after the crime, Powell, 23, was held until he was officially charged on Tuesday.
On the day of the shooting, Powell texted his brother saying he was depressed and drinking heavily. Police say when Powell surrendered to police Tuesday he told them he had a shotgun in his backpack. Police said he had two guns in his possession, but it's not clear what kind of guns they were.
A second person of interest named in the case last week is not being charged.
