Suspect In Stolen Car Killed In Officer-Involved Shooting

DENVER (CBS4) - One person is dead after an officer-involved shooting occurred late Monday night in Denver that has both police from Aurora and Denver investigating.

Aurora police officers followed a stolen Jeep into the parking lot of a 7-Eleven on East 11th Avenue and Yosemite Street after it had been seen in the area before. Officers tried to pin the vehicle but the suspect started ramming both police vehicles and the building.

Officers opened fire about 11:30 p.m. Monday.

"Multiple officers gave commands to the driver of the vehicle to turn the car off, to put his hands up, gave him every opportunity to give up," said Aurora Deputy Police Chief Paul O'Keefe.

The male suspect, 25-year-old Chan Lieth, was rushed to the local hospital but did not survive. The officers involved were not hurt. Both have been placed on administrative leave as per department policy when an officer is involved in a shooting.

The Jeep was stolen out of Denver. Investigators say over the last few days the suspect had been trying to bait police into some sort of pursuit, at one point even motioning with his hands for officers to follow him.

"The driver of the vehicle attempted to draw officers into a pursuit," said O'Keefe.

The suspect has not been identified.
