Supreme Court: Aereo Must Pay Broadcasters For Programming

DENVER (CBS4) – The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that Aereo must pay broadcasters, including CBS, when it takes programming and sells it to subscribers on tiny antennas.

The Supreme Court agreed in a 6-3 ruling, saying technological differences did not distinguish Aereo from cable systems.

"The broadcasters are arguing that Aereo is just like cable, so it should have to pay just like cable does," John Bergmayer with Public Knowledge said.

Public Knowledge is an organization it says "preserves the openness of the Internet and the public's access to knowledge."

Cable and satellite companies pay networks billions of dollars to retransmit programs. CBS4 is owned by the CBS network.
