Student Dies At Popular Hangout For Cliff Jumping
GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (CBS4)- A freshman football player at Colorado Mesa University drowned while swimming at a popular, yet dangerous area called the Potholes.
Calls for help came in Wednesday evening from Glade Park in the Grand Junction recreational area.
Austin Worbington had gone into the water and a medical helicopter was used to fly him to St. Mary's Hospital.
Worbington, 20, did not survive.
The Potholes are a local hangout and popular area for cliff jumping. Authorities say in a typical year there are at least two incidents and one death.
Colorado Mesa University issued this statement regarding Worbington's death: We are deeply saddened by the loss of Colorado Mesa University student Austin Worbington of Peyton, CO. Austin was a freshman studying Kinesiology, and he played wide receiver for our football team. He was known as a positive, energetic, and well-liked student. He leaves behind many friends on this campus.
Counseling services were available on campus for students today (May 12, 2016). Students may schedule an appointment with a counselor by calling 970-248-1366.
