Storm Water Draining System Working As Planned In Commerce City
COMMERCE CITY, Colo. (CBS4)- The storm water draining system in Commerce City is working as planned after several days of heavy rain passed through Colorado.
Severe storms bringing heavy rain and hail hit the Denver metro area once again on Thursday afternoon. On Wednesday, hail, heavy rain and tornadoes hit parts of Colorado, flooding Fairfax Park in Commerce City.
The park located near Highway 85 and 69th Avenue is part of a drainage system meant to hold water to keep it from causing flooding in nearby neighborhoods.
City officials began pumping some of the storm water out and into another hold area on Thursday afternoon.
Officials with Commerce City said the storm water system was working as designed and as of Thursday night the water levels had decreased to seven feet below the banks.
Commerce City Public Works crews will remain on site throughout the evening to monitor the pumps and clear the debris as the system drains.
The only road closure in that area on Thursday night was 96th Avenue from Eagle Creek to Potomac Road because of the flooding of First Creek. There is no estimate on when it will reopen.
There is also some standing water in the rights of way and medians in that area.
