Still No Sign Of Missing Climber On Longs Peak

ROCKY MOUNTAIN NATIONAL PARK, Colo. (CBS4) – After days of searching there is still no sign of a missing Broomfield man who was overdue from a mountaineering trek in the Longs Peak area.

Peter Jeffris, 25, reportedly left Sunday morning to summit Longs Peak and did not arrive at work on Monday.

Searchers did locate his Jeep but believe he wasn't prepared for the extreme winds and blowing snow.

"His car was located in the parking lot at the Longs Peak Trailhead. It's unclear what route he was planning, but he indicated to friends he was considering the Cables Route on the north face," Rocky Mountain National Park spokeswoman Kyle Patterson said in a statement. "He was not prepared to spend the night."

Friends say he left behind a tent and other cold weather gear.

Searchers were looking along the peak trail, the north face and the cables route near Chasm Lake.

The entire search area encompasses nearly 20 square miles and includes alpine, sub-alpine and heavily forested areas.

Although searches once again dealt with extreme winter conditions on Wednesday, winds lessened slightly and temperatures were warmer than Tuesday. Winds forecasted for Thursday are much less and if conditions are favorable, a helicopter may be used to aid in the search.
