Stearns Lake Search Over After 2nd Grenade Found

BOULDER COUNTY, Colo. (CBS4)- An extensive search for explosives at Stearns Lake in Boulder County wrapped up Thursday afternoon after two grenades were found there in less than two days.

Crews from the Boulder County Sheriff's Office with help from Longmont, searched the water and the shore for three hours but didn't come up with anything suspicious.

"They found a lot of fishing tackle and a horse shoe. They didn't find any explosives," said boulder County Sheriff's Office Cmdr. Heidi Prentup.

But the mystery of how those grenades got there remains unsolved.

The Boulder County Sheriff's Office had placed the popular area off limits to the public while they searched the area.

"I think it's dangerous, so many people walk these trails and fish in this lake, dogs play in it, kids play in it, I think it's very dangerous and careless," said Superior resident Jovita Schiffer.

Investigators believe the grenades likely washed ashore as the lake water receded.

"If somebody just thought throwing it in the lake could make it inert that would be great if they would come talk to us. Let us know if it is theirs, let us know if there are any more or if there are only two, that would be good to know," said Prentup.
