Steamboat Settles Trademark Fight With Salt Lake City
STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - Steamboat Ski Resort has forged a truce with Salt Lake City, Utah, after the Colorado resort claimed Utah infringed on its decades-old Ski Town USA trademark.
As part of the agreement, Salt Lake City can use Ski City in its campaigns. Other terms of the settlement are confidential.
"It's a small industry and we have plenty other things we could be working on," Rob Pearlman with Steamboat Ski Resort said. "We're really looking forward to getting on with our ski season rather than this dispute."
In October, the Salt Lake City Visitors Bureau campaign started claiming to be Ski City USA. It said it was actively trying to lure skiers from Colorado.
Steamboat sued in federal court.
"We filed the complaint because we want to protect our intellectual property," Pearlman said. "Visit Salt Lake has modified their campaign to our satisfaction, and we feel good about the outcome."
Steamboat Springs Resort acquired the trademark 55 years ago. It uses the Ski Town USA moniker heavily in advertising. This is the only time in half a century Steamboat has sued to protect the trademark
