Springs Teacher Gets National Attention For Quitting Over Low Pay

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) – An open letter from a teacher in Colorado Springs has grabbed the attention of people all across the country.

Pauline Hawkins has been an English and journalism teacher at Liberty High School for more than 10 years, but she will soon be stepping away from the school.

Hawkins posted the open letter online listing her reasons to leave.

"We definitely have to increase pay for teachers. But the other thing that absolutely has to happen is we have to get rid of the standardized testing," Hawkins said.

Hawkins says money that could be used to pay teachers is being poured into standardized testing, and if she continued teaching she would have to get a second job just to provide for her family.
