Soccer Fans In Denver Go Crazy After U.S. Gets Revenge On Ghana

DENVER (CBS4) – They had to wait a few years but the U.S. soccer team finally got its revenge after being ousted by Ghana from the last two World Cups – and fans across America, including in Denver, went crazy.

The U.S. didn't waste any time. Just 30 seconds into the game Clint Dempsey got loose and scored fastest goal in U.S. World Cup history.

Ghana kept attacking and finally broke through in the 82nd minute to tie the game, but not for long. Four minutes later 20-year-old John Brooks came off the bench to score the game-winning goal.

The U.S. won the World Cup opener 2-1.

Tense crowds watched the win at some of the local bars in downtown Denver.

"Ever since the World Cup started on Thursday everybody has been waiting for this game on Monday," soccer fan Dylan Garrett said. "I took off work, everybody else here got off work early. It's been a ton of anticipation and we're happy it's here."

The U.S. plays Portugal on Sunday. If they win that game they advance to the second round.
