Snow Tire Requirement Negotiations Begin At Statehouse
DENVER (AP) — A last-ditch effort to reach an agreement on mandatory snow tires begins Tuesday morning at the Colorado Capitol.
Members of the House and Senate will try to broker an agreement on requiring winter snow tread or chains for noncommercial vehicles on mountainous stretches of Interstate 70.
The requirement passed the House but deflated in the Senate. Some Republicans called the requirement too hard to enforce. The Senate amended the bill so that transportation officials would study the matter but not require snow tires.
The Colorado Department of Transportation already requires winter snow chains on commercial vehicles on I-70. And the agency can extend the requirement to private motorists during a declared "snow emergency." The bill would extend that requirement to the entire snowy season.
