Smash & Grab Suspects Wanted In Nearly 30 Burglaries
DENVER (CBS4)- Police in Denver are searching for two suspects wanted in more than two dozen smash and grab burglaries over the past few weeks.
"We're calling this crew the 'Smash & Grab Bandits,'" said Denver Police Commander Paul Pazen.
At least 29 businesses, including convenience stores, cell phone stores and restaurants, have been targeted after business hours. At least two vehicles also have been stolen. One was recovered on Wednesday.
"Primarily they're hitting restaurants and removing cash from the register or the entire register itself," said Pazen.
The suspects use large rocks or bricks to smash their way into the West Denver businesses. They also are disguised head to toe and often use stolen vehicles.
"We've seen approximately 30 stores in the West Denver and West metro area that have been burglarized," said Pazen.
Investigators are going door-to-door to warn business owners about the thieves.
"One of them stopped by and actually gave us these posters saying there's no cash in the register," said business owner Carlos Domingues. "I worry but at the same time we have good security."
"We're trying to communicate to the business owners to have them remove all the cash at night and help protect themselves from becoming victims of crime," said Pazen.
Other safety tips police are giving to businesses is to get tempered glass or shatter-proof window films.
Denver Police have a special task force investigating the crimes but are asking for the public's help. Anyone with information is asked to call police.
