Sheriff: 2 Killed After Experimental Plane Crashes In Weld County
KERSEY, Colo. (CBS4) - The Weld County Sheriff's Office has confirmed that two people died in a small plane that crashed Wednesday afternoon.
The plane went down near Weld County Roads 50 and 53 south of Kersey around 2:30 p.m.
Copter4 flew over the crash about 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and showed a huge black mark several yards long on the ground. Wreckage was scattered all around that black mark.
The crash sparked a small grass fire that was immediately put out.
Authorities said the two people who were killed were the only people on board when the plane went down.
What caused the plane to go down is being investigated. Investigators were seen taking pictures of the wreckage in the field.
The Associated Press reported that Allen Kenitzer, a regional spokesman for the Federal Aviation Administration, said the aircraft is a three-seat experimental Wheeler Express. It's registered out of Aurora.
It is unknown where the plane was going or from where it took off.
The names of those on board have not been released.
