2 Killed After Small Plane Crashes During Takeoff In Colorado Springs
COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (CBS4) - Authorities say a pilot and a passenger were killed when a small plane crashed in Colorado Springs late Monday morning.
The smoke from the crash scene was visible on a Colorado Department of Transportation traffic camera located at the intersection of East Platte Avenue and South Powers Boulevard.
That's close to the Colorado Springs Airport and Peterson Air Force Base.
The pilot reported loss of engine power and witnesses saw the plane spiraling toward the ground.
"We were just talking and all of a sudden we heard a 'boom,' just a thud-like sound. It wasn't like an explosion," a witness said.
Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Allen Kenitzer said the plane was a Cirrus SR22.
The impact of the crash started a grass fire.
The names of the victims haven't been released.
Both the FAA and the National Transportation Safety Board will investigate.
