Skimmers Found On Self-Checkout Machines At 3 Denver Area Safeway Stores

DENVER (CBS4) - Customers at some Denver area Safeway stores may have had their credit card information stolen.

Skimmers were found attached to the credit card machines in three stores: the Safeway in Conifer, the store at West Colfax Avenue and Garrison Street in Lakewood, and the store at 44th Avenue and Lowell Street in Denver.

The breach happened in early November but was just announced Wednesday.

Safeway spokeswoman Kris Staaf says they don't yet know how many customers are impacted. She recommends calling your bank if you shopped at one of those three locations.

They believe they found the skimmers soon after they were installed.

"We train our employees to look for things like … is the pin pad a little off-kilter? Does the color not match?" Staaf said. "So that's what really triggered this. We found it internally."

Customers will not be responsible for fraudulent charges in their cards.

Skimmers were also found in stores in California.

Statement From Safeway

When our store teams find evidence of criminal activity like this, we have been able to pinpoint with surveillance video when the devices were installed and how many transactions were processed. We immediately followed the proper protocol of contacting law enforcement and the banks that service the few cards that were used on those pin pads. Customers who have any concerns, should review their bank statements for fraudulent activity in November, or contact their cardholder or bank directly.
